Morris Black recently was given a unique challenge: build a professional chef’s kitchen television set for PBS 39, the LehighValley’s public tv station. This set will be used for producing cooking shows, then broken down and moved when the space is used for other types of shows.

PBS 39 Cooking Show set created by Morris BlackThe specifications included an 18 foot island, a prep area with two wall ovens, and a staging area to highlight completed dishes. Since the area is actually a film set, special considerations included a flexible design and non-glare matte finishes. The 18-foot island and portions of the back and side walls have an 8-inch black toe kick that hides 6’ heavy-duty casters that allow the island to be rolled away with one hand.

Charles Buchsbaum, Morris Black Designer and Operations Manager was chosen for the task. He created a contemporary space featuring a Bertollini gas cooktop with four burners and a griddle, dual wall ovens mounted at camera height, a Blomberg stainless refrigerator, and two sets of Blanco professional faucets and sinks. The cabinetry, which was manufactured in the Morris Black shop, features tiger-stripe laminate, accented by crimson matt laminate and a multicolored glass mosaic backsplash. Corian countertops are offset by Zodiac quartz on the console and chef’s completed dish display and tasting area at the end of the island. The under-cabinet and accent lighting are all on dimmers, and the glass in the wall cabinets is frosted to cut down on glare.

The kitchen set was premiered in December, and filming will start on cooking shows such as “The Chef’s Kitchen”.
